Dave Simpson reviews Spooky and David Bennun reviews Kenickie live, 13th July 1996

Dave Simpson reviews Spooky live at The Banks of the Tiber, Rome and David Bennun reviews Kenickie live at The Zap, Brighton.

Well well, who’d have thunk it huh? As Bennun swoons over the gestating Kenickie from the outset, halfway through, there’s this paragraph;

“Just assuming that you can’t justify a band on banter – and if you ever could, this would be the band – how about the fact that they’re stylish, sexy, funnier than life itself? And yes, most of the male music journalists I know want to sleep with them.”

With the benefit of hindsight that really is most amusing as one of them rather famously went on to do just that. You lucky sod.

But that banter was as real and intoxicating as Bennun describes. You just couldn’t help but fall for it. And yet now Lauren Laverne has transformed herself into the de facto face of all things cultural for the BBC, it’s easy to forget quite how intelligent and spunky she used to be.

I’m aware that I need to be respectful when talking about individuals here who could easily be reading, however the sad fact remains; the prettier Laverne gets, the less relevant she becomes. Her personality has now been diluted, flattened and pummelled to a shadow of its former self in order to make her palatable for a mainstream audience. What’s so wrong with allowing women to be intelligent, witty and feisty? Let her be herself. Closest thing these days is her radio show on 6Music but it’s still a pale imitation.

This clip from Planet Pop shows how good she was, and probably still is, despite the annoying editing and her rather lank, greasy hair. But hey…that’s showbiz and these are the compromises it seems you have to make if you’re gonna get on in the world of TV.

    Lauren rocks. She used to drink at the Heavenly Social pub [great jukebox; sometimes you’d go and there’d be Pete Wiggs spinning northern soul 7″s over in the corner] in Islington which was great cos it was near my work too and we could go there afterwards so as to glance over and fawn at her sassy ways…

    Thanks, thanks, thanks.

    Exactly the sort of review that I used to live for from the British press.

    And just the sort of review that, in 1996 or 1997, would have sent me to a string of shops in the D.C. area looking for import singles from Kenickie.

    I’ve been out of the country for almost a decade now, so I have no idea who the lucky sod was (anyone care to enlighten me so I can be a wee bit jealous?) and have not been subjected to/had the pleasure of Ms Laverne as ace TV presenter. I like to think its a case of the girl done good instead of the girl dumbed down.

    What happened to the rest of them? I remember getting off a bus that Marie was embarking on to outside the Dublin Castle. Hopefully she’s not still riding around on it.

    Marie and Emmy-Kate had a band called Rosita that had one decent EP about a decade ago (!). I think Emmy-Kate is out of the biz and Marie does some arts-related work.

    Pete (the multi-monikered drummer, etc.) has done a few things, most recently a one-man project called George Washington Brown which I keep telling people is like an upbeat Arab Strap.

    There’s an EP just out on Catbird Records and supposedly a full length to come on Slumberland (so I’ve heard).

      Marie went back to the Northeast in 2007 and made a part-time return to music, joining folk band The Cornshed Sisters. She’s still a member 13 years later and they’ve put out two albums on Memphis Industries (Tell Tales in 2012 and Honey And Tar in 2017, the latter featuring four Marie songs, the first CD release of new songs by any of the three Krazy Kenickie Gals (TM) since Lauren’s solo EP Take These Flowers Away in Aug 2000.) They also did a national tour supporting The Futureheads in 2012 but sadly I was on holiday at the time of the Brum date.

    Her sources were a bit off though. Royal Trux actually produced that Chicks album. She probably hasn’t got it though, it’s very rare…..
