Sidelines - REM, The Pretenders, The B-52s and Erasure record for animal rights, 26th Oct 1991

Your wish, my command – etc. etc. I’d probably have skipped this without the request – I think now that you can see and read it for yourself you’ll understand why.

Mr. Agreeable savages Lush tomorrow.

OK so this is what I’m going to do. Pick a copy from random year. Scan the cover and all pages inside that seem worth it, then move on to another issue. This way there’s a sense of randomness and I get to have just 2 piles, scanned and not scanned.

So I picked this up initially because I have a friend who’s mate’s with Dean, but skimming through this now it feels like there’s something of interest on every page. ET’s not going to appreciate being reminded of the cover story interview he did with The Cranberries though. So tune in again and hold your breath – because Midway Still ARE coming back – at least in print anyway.

Ian Gittins profiles The Cranberries in Sidelines, 20th July 1991

I’ve never understood the retrospective cringe factor expressed by many of the writers about their past work appearing on this site up to now. I’ve never tried to intentionally embarrass any of the writers. But this…thisĀ  is embarrassing. Ian – I’m really, really sorry but it’s too good not to post.

David Stubbs interviews Kraftwerk, 20th July 1991

At least Stubbs has been consistent in his love of krautrock as evidenced in this piece from 1991. Mueller’s 5,000 word articles in praise of Cuntry. A. Bumpkin and his ilk, being conspicuously absent from the pages of the Maker during the 90’s.

Which leaves me wondering when exactly did this bizarre affliction strike Mueller to such a debilitating degree. Is it the result of some sort of recent mid-life crisis or perhaps an unluckly side effect of diligent, socio-political globe trotting. “I’ve been around the world and I, I, I….I just love Nashville boy”

Nein, danke!

Everett True reviews The Pixies, Ride, Cud, The Miltown Brothers & The Boo Radleys live at the Crystal Palace Bowl.

“The Pixies are living affirmation that rock is still alive and kicking its way far into our lives. The greatest rock band on the planet? Name me another of their stature.”

I have to agree with ET and it’s really pleasing to think that unlike many bands who were puffed up to dizzy heights only to vaporise to nothing outside of whatever crest of a scene they rode up on, The Pixies music is still as vital and compelling now as it was then. Truly a great, great band.

Hole in Sidelines 15th June 1991

Everett True profiles Hole in Sidelines. Taken from Melody Maker 15th June 1991.

“Courtney in her long and varied history (she’s only 24) has lived through more traumas than most of you f***ing lamebrains will experience in your life.”

Quite. If only Everett could have known then that she was just getting started. I remember when MM reported those first, very early, barely coherent USENET posts of hers around 1994 and she’s still fucking doing it (click Courtney Love -> Blog). Now click into the photos section if you dare. Finally reacquaint yourself with all Courtney’s uppers and downers via her extensive Wikipedia entry here.

Was looking around for something Nirvana related just so I could post this (below), which I saw for the first time this afternoon. Presumably this is well known material I’ve somehow missed but guessing it’ll be new to quite a few of you too. File under bizarre.

Highlights at
0.22 – Gary rips the T-Shirt from his hulking frame
1.26 – Gary does the can-can to ‘my libido..’
1.40 – Mark, surely not for the first time, drops to his knees and slowly deflates under the pressure of Gary’s punishing vocal
2.38 – Jason’s crushing Hank Williams style solo perforates every hymen within the first six rows of the stage

Live Reviews including The Soup Dragons/Blur at Brixton Academy, 5th January 1991

Various live reviews taken from Melody Maker 5th January 1991.

Ian Watson reviews Soup Daragons / Blur at Briston Academy and Hothouse Flowers at Wembley Arena…my God, were Hothouse Flowers really ever this big? Michael Bonner reviews Aztec Camera at Brixton Academy and Loop at the Kilburn National. Ngaire reviews Test Department at the Subterania

Many thanks to Andrew Mueller for writing a little review of this site on his blog. It’s nice to cause the tiniest ripple in the ultimate pond. Andrew should count himself lucky though – check this toe curling introduction to Galaxie 500 from Ngaire.

I feel like I should hold back on what I say here a little these days but I think this post puts it well, although I never had one of those hooded tops. I did have one of those Penguin Classic T-Shirts that you can see a young Damon wearing in the photo though.

Anyway it’s not just Ngaire. Here’s Caitlin Moran on the shortlived Naked City.

Which reminds me of this moment of TV perfection.

Finally if Brian Ferry ever covered a Beloved song it might sound a bit like this.

Anyone else able got any related gems from youtube they’d care to share?
