Melody Maker singles of the year 1988

Melody Maker singles of the year 1988.

Got lots to say but no time right now. A few points on the above.

You Made Me Realise should be No.1 and Freak Scene should be No.2

Although you’re most likely to hear Crash as the soundtrack to a compilation of home movies it is a *great* pop single and should be higher.

The Young Gods inexplicably make the charts. I never got them and I know I wasn’t the only one. Someone commented a while back about how they seemed like an elaborate practical joke, as if Stubbs and co. had had a pub bet between themselves that they could break even the most difficult, avant-nonsense group. I think bovine masses got it right on this occasion.

Thanks again to the Idolator for the traffic spike. Thanks to everyone that emailed too – it’s really nice to hear from everyone.

I have to get ready for a 40th birthday party now, not mine quite yet, but fucking hell….40!

This particular single of the year page opened the new world of music to me. The world where Scritti Politti and Womack&Womack can sit next to MBV, Dinosaur JR and House Of Love. I didn’t quite understand my own taste why i loved them all (how naive), and this MM poll proved my point exactly.

This is an accurate soundtrack to my 17 year old musical cherry being popped.

Some flirty looks with with the Primitives. Then making a move with the House of Love. Hand up the jumper and – oh – My Bloody Valentine and the blood is rushing. Everything is Gigantic and Freak Scene and Collision and – oh my fucking god – hands in the knickers – and the time is right for a clumsy teenage REVOLUTION REVOLUTION REVOLUTION!

What a year. You Made Me Realise EP gets my no.1. Gigantic, Freak Scene, Christine, Destroy The Heart, Collision, Crash and Revolution all get joint 2nd. I still rate them all.

The Young Gods and Front 242 are Jive Bunny do heavy metal. Today they’d be making mobile phone ringtones or making soundtracks to gay workout DVD’S. Total fucking rubbish.

Does anyone, anyone in the world, still listen to their lightweight Marilyn Manson lite goth disco?
