The Sundays interviewed by Everett True before he became close personal friends with Kurdt Cobain. Taken from MelodyMaker Jan 20th 1990.
Reading, Writing and Arithmetic is one of the few records from around this time that I still listen to today and if you’ve not heard the album I’d strongly urge you to go and buy a copy. From memory the 2nd album was crap and I didn’t even know they’d released a third. I’d assumed they’d had split up but according to their Wikipedia entry not only are the band together but so are Harriet and David, who are currently focusing on raising their two children. Awwhh bless!
Now the hype’s died down I’m going to check out those other two records and see if they’re as good as the first one.
These fullscap Melody Makers are a bitch to scan in by the way. This one took more than 10 A4 scans so I hope someone out there appreciates it one day.

Firstly, let me say thank you for The Sundays article. A very interesting read as I picked up another tidbit of info on them. As a fan of this band and one who worships the ground that Harriet walks on, I greatly appreciate your scans. Secondly, what do you mean their second CD was crap??! ;)

Dear Charles,
I read your critique of The Sunday’s RWA versus Blind and I beg to differ. I was a big fan of RWA upon its release. However, I found Blind to not only the better of the two albums, but near perfect. I believed The Sundays crafted a more competent and melodic album with Blind than their freshman effort. I may be wrong (I’m not), but I believed any prejudice you may have against Blind was the result of an unfounded and baseless disappointment coerced by the music media circa 1992.

Haha – well that’s me told isn’t it? I wasn’t aware I’d written a critique, just a flippant judgement. It’s both a surprise and a pleasure to discover The Sundays to be held in such high regard by so many.

I love The Sundays, but I must be a few years younger than the rest of you as I came to them late, during Uni, on release of their third album.
Only a few years after that did it occurred to me that the band who made an album that I loved so much might have made other equally great albums? So, I bought the first two albums and I have to say that I thought Blind was a bit of a disappointment – and that comes from somebody who never read a single NME. Reading, Writing & Arithmetic is a classic though. For me Static & Silence is still my favourite, but probably lies in the middle of the three in terms of overall quality. Monochrome is a truly magnificent song, probably their best.
I fear I’ll never get to see them live, but it’s high on my list of things to do before I shuffle off, if I ever get the chance.

It’s a good read. I loved these folks since I was a little girl ( I think I still am little.. :P).
I hope they’d get back and play a few more songs whether it’s old or new. Just like you and a some people reading this blog, I miss them. Terribly. :)

The questions are alright (I guess) and it’s clear we had quite a good rapport going but… Jeez. I was such a wannabe Chris Roberts for those six months back then! And not a very good copy, at that.

Greetings from Ohio! I’m bored to tears at work so I decided to check out your blog on my iphone during lunch break. I love the knowledge you present here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home. I’m surprised at how quick your blog loaded on my mobile .. I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G ..
