Scans from the Melody Maker and N.M.E. circa 1987-1996
Damon Albarn of Blur on the cover of N.M.E. 8th October 1994. Photo by Kevin Cummins.
Blur do a short tour of America to promote Parklife. When did Albarn eventually stop wearing that necklace? Am I imagining it or was there some incident where it was ripped off him at a gig or something?
Blame the Suede flexidisc for the large tear on this cover. I wonder where that flexidisc is now….ah yes I know…the bin.

can someone hurry up and write on this post? i’m curious to know where his necklace went. as far as i know he still has it, just doesn’t wear it anymore… maybe he’s just outgrown it

actually, the last i heard was that damon was still wearing his necklace, but it is significantly smaller than it used to be in the old days. i believe he did a show in ’96 and some fan reached for his neck and tore the necklace, and… well, reportedly, this was during his “crack” phase, so he freaked out and stopped the show and made people look for as many pieces as possible. if you see pictures of him after this incident, he is still wearing the necklace, but it’s not comparable to what it looked like in his earlier days – there’s considerably less beads.
of course, since it was a memento from his mother, i can sort of rationalise the freaking out over its destruction….

That sounds quite plausable. Although he definatley still had it in 2003, because he is wearing it in the documentry ‘live forever’. Although he isn’t wearing it in any of the think tank press pictures or music clips. On ‘The Good, The Bad, and the Queen’ he isn’t wearing it either. Does it still exsist? does he ever wear it? where can i get something simular? Theres a lot of history in that necklace, 35 years of it. And he wore it when he was ‘not famous’ through to his famous years… anyone out there can answer my questions on this topic?
